Spaniels, in particular, are troubled with a mangy kind of eruption round the edges of the ear. The hair falls off, and there are heat and sealiness of the skin. This disorder may, but rarely does, run on to canker.

Pointers and hounds are affected with a complaint which begins in a somewhat similar manner, but which assumes a more severe character, and is apt to terminate in true canker.

When mange, affecting the back, or feet, or any other part of the surface, suddenly disappears, or is repelled by outward applications, it is not uncommon to find one or both ears becoming inflamed, thickened, and scurfy.

Treatment

When scurfy ears are found in association with a mangy state of the skin generally, the treatment should be directed to the major disease, according to directions laid down under "Eczema" and "Mange." When mange does not co-exist, one dose of Arsenicum * should be given thrice a-day, for several days, followed, if necessary, by Sulphur, in the same way.
