A firm textured, coarsely woven, natural coloured linen would be the ideal ground for this simple but spirited design. The colours should be the Egyptian greens, reds, and blues. Make the disk in the centre solid blue with red outline and all the stems and leaves green. Use three shades of red for the lotus flowers and buds, and let a heavy black outline surround the whole pattern and form the markings in the large corner leaves. Very thick embroidery silk or tapestry worsteds may be used with equally good effect. It wiil be seen that by an ingenious arrangement the group of blossoms, together with a single leaf and bud, which on pages 46 and 47 we give full-working size, has only to be repeated four times to give the entire design.
