The gold veins in marbled paper, or on the marbled edges of books, may be produced as follows: - Let the rest of the marbling be thoroughly dry. Then beat well together 1 part white of egg, 1 part spirit of wine, 2 parts water. Let the mixture get clear, then wet a small portion of gold powder (shell gold will do), mixing well with the finger, and apply with a small camel-hair pencil. Let it get thoroughly dry before burnishing, which should be done with a polisher made only moderately warm. The beginner should make several experiments before proceeding with the actual work.
