A cart suitable for a pony from 11 to 12 hands high is shown below. The length of the body is 4 ft. at the bottom and 2 ft. 6in. on the seat. The bottom panel sides are 10 1/2 in. deep under the seat and 7in. at the front. The front board is 8in. deep. The top sides are 1ft. deep, and are bent over sharp at the top, each being fastened with two half-round irons in addition to being screwed from outside to pieces that the seat slides on, which, with a cross bar, are of birch or oak 1 in. thick and 3 1/4 in. wide before being dressed. These bent sides can be made of |-in. walnut finished in plain varnish, and give a nice contrast to the black japan on the bottom panels; a piece of wide wood bead, having a strip of plated bead fastened along the centre, going over all. The bottom of the body is 3 ft. wide, and may be made either quite square or, if preferred, spread out each side l in., when 2ft. l0 in. will be wide enough for the bottom. The bottom boards are 1-in. deal. The simplest way of putting the cart together is to screw a batten along inside either side and nail the boards to these, having a good bar of 1 -in. ash at back and front, and underneath all is nailed a couple of pieces of hoop-iron. The elliptic springs are 3ft. long, with four plates l1/4 i in. wide.

They are fastened to the body with angle-irons and blocks l in. deep by 4 1/2 in. long. The l 1/8 in. axle is cranked 4 1/12 in. deep. The dash is 22in. long and 15 in. high; wings, Gin. wide, fin. thick, and 2ft. 6 in. long; wheels, 3ft. 6in. high; stocks, 7in. by 5 1/2 in. diameter. There are twelve l 3/8 -in. spokes; felloes finish 1 3/8 in. wide by l1/2 in. deep; tyres, l 1/8 in. wide. The shafts are 4ft. 10 in. long in front of splinter-bar, and 1ft. Sin. wide at tugs, which are 14 in. from points; they go inside the body, and are fastened in rubber bearings at the front and with a long cross spring at the back. If required rather stronger for rougher usage, have the stocks 6 in. or 6 1/2 in. diameter, and spokes 1/8 in. and felloes 1/4 in. larger than the measures given. In this case the springs might have another plate added with advantage.
