In the first four school years the handwork should be selected from many fields. It should never be confined to one branch of industry. The following occupations all offer excellent opportunities for the choice of interesting and developing work for early grades : coarse sewing; cord and raffia work; spool knitting; crocheting; knitting (finger and coarse needle); weaving; primitive textile industries (cleaning, carding, spinning, dyeing, and bleaching); calico printing; housekeeping and family life; housebuilding; paperhanging; decorating and furnishing; paper cutting; cardboard construction; pasting; drawing, designing and painting; basketry; clay modelling; toy and game making; woodwork; festival preparation (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Washington's Birthday, birthdays); cooperative work on sand trays (such as Filipino, Esquimaux, Robinson Crusoe, keeping store and neighborhood occupations).
