The original design of this work was for the flower-garden alone; but, as many shrubs and trees are connected with the flower-garden, and as there is an increasing taste for ornamental and shade trees for public squares and roadsides, as well as for landscape gardening, I have thought it would meet the wishes of the public that a brief notice should be given of some of the most prominent trees suitable for those purposes; and also of some shrubs omitted in former editions, and some new ones recently introduced.
