Found in dry and rocky woods. Connecticut to North Carolina, westward to Minnesota, Kansas, and Mississippi.

Flowers

Greenish or purplish, 5-cleft, with several orange-tipped filaments protruding; borne in a long, narrow cluster on a more or less hairy stem, 2 - 3 feet high.

Leaves

Heart-shaped, with rounded lobes and teeth.
