Evergreen prostrate and trailing scarcely shrubby plants with exfoliating bark. Twigs slender; pith moderate, rounded, continuous. Buds solitary or multiple, hairy. Leaves alternate, elliptic-ovate, cordate, entire, ciliate, reticulate.

1. E. repens L. Trailing Arbutus. Branches red-bristly, 1.5-4 dm. high; leaves 2.5-7.5 cm. long; capsules depressed-globular, 5-lobed, 8-10 mm. in diameter. Sandy woods, Florida to Mississippi, north to Labrador and Saskatchewan (Fig. 260).
