Deciduous or evergreen shrubs. Twigs slender, somewhat 3-sided; pith round. Buds solitary, sessile, oblong, appressed, with 2 visible scales. Leaf-scars alternate, small, half-round; bundle-trace 1; stipule-scars none. Fruit a globular capsule persistent in winter.

1. L. ligustrina (L.) DC. Maleberry. Deciduous much-branched shrub to 4 m. tall; twigs puberulent or glabrous; capsule about 3 mm. in diameter. Usually in moist thickets, Florida to Texas, north to New England, Kentucky and Oklahoma (Fig. 256).
