There is no set formula that the barkeeper follows in making the mixed drinks. Each one may vary it to suit himself or the taste of his customer. I think that if the number of these mixed drinks which are sold in different parts of the United States could be brought together, there would be more than 500 of them, yet practically all are built upon the same plan. The list of the more common ones follows:

Brandy And Soda

This beverage is true to name and consists of about half brandy and half plain soda water, seltzer or other carbonated mineral water.

Wine Cobbler

Cobblers are made with various kinds of wines, sweetened and flavored with pineapple, orange, lemon peel, various fruits, Angostura bitters, etc. It is not to be understood that all these are used in any one cobbler, but some of them are contained in every mixed drink that bears that name.

Applejack Cocktail

Apple brandy is commonly known as applejack, and this gives the name to the cocktail in which applejack is the alcoholic constituent.

Bronx Cocktail

This drink contains orange as one of its chief flavors, and also French or Italian vermouth. The alcoholic constituent is gin.

Manhattan Cocktail

This is one of the most common cocktails served. It is made in many different ways. The original Manhattan used whisky as the alcoholic base, flavored with Angostura bitters and vermouth. Usually a so-called red cherry is served with this cocktail. There are various modifications of this drink, but generally built upon this plan.

Martini Cocktail

This is built up much in the same style as the Manhattan, using gin as the alcoholic ingredient and flavoring with vermouth and orange bitters. These cocktails may be dry or sweetened. When ordered dry no sugar is used in their manufacture.

Saratoga Cocktail

The alcoholic constituents of the Saratoga cocktail are whisky and brandy in equal parts. Angostura bitters are the chief flavoring agents but vermouth is also employed.

Sazarack Cocktail

The alcoholic constituent of the Sazarack cocktail is Bourbon whisky. Angostura bitters and vermouth are the flavoring agents. All apparatus employed, as well as the drink itself, is to be chilled.
