The huckleberry is the fruit of a small bush or shrub belonging to the Heath family (Ericaceae). They are also called whortleberries and blueberries. There are several species, the two principal ones in this country being the high-bush and the low-bush huckleberry. There is not much difference in the fruit of the two kinds. The berry is almost black, sometimes covered with a light-blue powder. The inside is light colored, and contains many small seeds. It is quite mild in flavor, and is excellent for those who can not eat acid foods.
