1/2 cup butter 1 cup sugar

1 egg

1 cup sour milk

1 teaspoon cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon

1 teaspoon soda in milk

1 teaspoon baking powder salt

2 cups flour

Method :

Cream butter and sugar, add egg, milk and flour alternately and spices. Rake in moderate oven forty minutes.

Spice Cake With Caramel Frosting

1/2 cup butter

1 cup sour milk

11/2 cups brown sugar

21/2 cups flour

2 eggs

1 level teaspoon soda

1 teaspoon baking powder (level)

1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg Y\ teaspoon cloves 1 tablespoon cocoa 1 teaspoon boiling water

Method :

Cream the butter, add the sugar and the yolks of the eggs, and cream. Then add the sour milk, stir into it the soda which has been dissolved in one teaspoonful boiling water, and add the spices and cocoa. Sift the flour twice, reserving one-fourth cupful for the last. Add the flour, stir, then add the baking powder which has been sifted twice with the one-fourth cupful flour. Stir through gently then add the beaten whites of the eggs and stir gently. Place in layer tins and bake in a moderat oven for thirty minutes.

Caramel Frosting

11/2 cups sweet cream 11/2 cups brown sugar 3 tablespoons butter

3 tablespoons vanilla 2 tablespoons flour

Method :

Place all of the ingredients in a double boiler except the vanilla, cook until they thicken, then add the vanilla. Spread between the layers of the spice cake.
