2 Cups apple sauce, 1 scant cup sugar or molasses (if molasses is used a little more flour is needed), 3 cups flour, 3 scant teaspoons soda, 1/2 cup shortening, 1 cup nuts and 1 cup raisins. Mrs. D. B. Harvey.
1 1/2 Cups sugar, 1 cup butter, 2 eggs, 1 1/2 cups hot apple sauce, 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 of all spice and 1 of soda, 1 cup of nuts or raisins or both. Cream butter and sugar, add spices and cream, add beaten eggs, then apple sauce and flour with soda. Bake in large pan in moderate oven. Mrs. W. V. RATHBONE.
3 Cups flour, 1 scant cup sugar, 1/2 cup butter and lard mixed, 1 cup sweet milk, 2 teaspoons baking powder and a pinch of salt. Put in a shallow pan, peel and slice apples, lay on top of mixture, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon and tiny bits of butter and bake. Mrs. Fred Baumer.
2 Cups brown sugar, 2 cups flour, 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup of butter, 5 eggs, 1 teaspoon each soda, cloves, allspice, cinnamon, 2/3 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder. Leave out the whites of 2 eggs for the icing. Use boiled icing. Mrs. C. E. Combe.
1 Cup butter, 3 cups brown sugar, 4 eggs, 1 cup sour milk, 3 cups flour, 1 teaspoon each soda, cloves and spice, 2 tea-spoons cinnamon, 1 cup raisins, 1 cup nuts. Cream butter and sugar and add well-beaten yolks. Sift soda and flour and spices together and add alternately with the milk and floured raisins and nuts, add the stiffly beaten whites of eggs and bake in a well buttered pan. Ruby Rice.
1 Cup sugar, 1 cup butter, 2 cups flour, 1 egg, 1 cup sour milk, 1 level teaspoon soda, 1 teaspoon baking powder with the flour, 1 teaspoon each cloves, cinnamon, allspice and grated nutmeg. Cream butter and sugar, add egg and beat well, then add milk in which soda has been dissolved. Mix spices with flour and add alternately with milk. Bake 45 minutes. Mrs. D. B. Harvey.
1 1/2 Cups sugar, 1 cup butter (scant), 1 cup sour milk, 1 teaspoon soda in the milk, the yolks of 3 eggs and white of 1, 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon each cinnamon and spice, 1 tea-spoon nutmeg. Bake in 2 layers and put together with white icing. Mrs. Harry ClarK,
1 Cup brown sugar, 1 1/4 cups water, 1/2 cup lard, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon cloves, 1 teaspoon allspice. Boil all these together for 5 minutes, when cool add this to 2 cups of flour to which have been added 1 teaspoon soda and 1 teaspoon baking powder. Bake in a moderate oven 20 or 30 minutes. 1 Cup brown sugar, 1 1/4 cups water, 1 cup seeded raisins, 2 ounces citron, cut fine (may be omitted), 1/3 cup shortening,
1 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon salt,
2 cups flour and 5 teaspoons baking powder. Boil sugar, water, fruit, shortening, salt and spices together 3 minutes.
When cool add flour and baking powder which have been sifted together. Mix well and bake in a loaf for about 45 minutes. Mrs. D. A. Lehman.
1 Cup sugar, 1/4 cup butter, 1 teaspoon salt, 11/2 cups sweetened apple sauce, 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 cup chopped dates, 2 tea-spoons soda, 3 eggs, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1 of allspice and 1 of cloves and 1 cup nuts. Cream butter and sugar, add well-beaten egg yolks, then apple sauce. Sift dry ingredients several times and add to above mixture. Add dates and nuts and last fold in egg whites. Ruby Rice.
2 Cups sugar (light brown or white), 3/4 cup butter, 3 whole eggs, 3 1/2 cups flour, 1 tablespoon Royal baking powder, 2 teaspoons soda dissolved in cold water, 1 cup buttermilk, 2 cups jam or 2 small glasses jelly, 1/2 teaspoon each cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg. Bake in layers and put together with caramel.
Caramel Filling: 2 Cups sugar, 1 cup milk or cream, 1/4 cup butter. Flavor with vanilla. Cook together and beat until smooth.

6 Eggs, 3 cups flour, 2 cups sugar, 1/2 cup butter, 1 1/2 cups blackberry jam, 6 tablespoons sour milk, 2 teaspoons soda, 2 teaspoons cinnamon and 1/2 nutmeg. Bake in layers and use any icing. Mrs. W. V. Rathbone.
2 Cups brown sugar, 1 cup butter, 1 cup strawberry jam, 1 cup buttermilk, 2 teaspoons soda, 4 eggs and 1 teaspoon each of cinnamon, cloves, allspice and nutmeg. Add 2 1/2 cups flour. Bake in layers and put together with icing.
