A distinct shrub, 6-15 ft. high, with pinnate leaves and large brilliant scarlet pea-like flowers in early summer. It requires warm sheltered spots. The "Glory Pea" of Australia (C. Dampieri) grows about 2 ft. high. It has silvery hairy leaves and drooping clusters of scarlet flowers, each with a brilliant black blotch at the base of the upper (standard) petal (fig. 423). This species is usually grafted on stocks of Colutea arborescens.
