Plant Culture

George H.: Please accept thanks for the suggestion, which, as far as practicable, shall be acted on.

The West Grove (Pa.) Experimental Farm

The State Experimental Farm at West Grove, Pa., from which so much good to horticulture as well as agriculture was once expected, has been finally abandoned, and sold for $10,000 to Daniel Hood. The very large number of rare trees collected by Thomas N. Harvey, ought to give the spot arboricultural value, outside of a mere piece of real estate.

James Reid

This admirable gentleman, well known in connection formerly with the great house of Peter Henderson & Co., but latterly in business on his own account, died at his home on the 17th of November. He was among the foremost in elevating floriculture to the high position it now occupies in public estimation, and his loss will be severely felt by his associates.

Edward Morris Davis

This well known publicist, whose death at 77, has recently been announced, was also a famous amateur horticulturist. His grounds at Oak Lane, near Philadelphia, were well stocked with rare trees for which he had a warm place in his heart. He was son-in-law to Lucretia Mott, the philanthropist.

Garden And Forest

Under this title a new magazine, under the editorship of Prof. Sargent, is talked of.

Alabama As It Is

The Immigrant's and Capitalist's Guide Book to Alabama, by Dr. B. F. Riley; published by the State. A large book of 212 pages. It will be especially useful to those interested in pushing horticultural industries. Alabama is a particularly promising State for these enterprises.

Chrysanthemum Shows

These seem to be flowing like a tidal wave. Accounts are coming to us from all quarters of shows that were held last fall. We wish the secretaries would send us something more than merely who got the first premium, the second premium, and the third premium. The lists sent us would fill the whole number of the monthly. We hate to throw aside what has given so much trouble and kindness to send, but we can only insert descriptions of the prize articles.

Judging By Ballot

On account of the utter folly of trying to please disappointed exhibitors by getting the very best judges that could be procured, a recent trial was made by an English society to have the awards made by a ballot of the visitors. The disappointed ones now desire to return to the old system.

Classes Of Chrysanthemums

In the old world, the exhibits are arranged strictly in classes, which helps the judges very much in their difficult task of deciding on the successful competitors.
