The Calycanthus is a handsome deciduous shrub with sweet-scented red or yellow-brown flowers, native of this State, the Southern States and Japan.

It grows in any good soil which is well drained, and prefers a sheltered situation.

Propagate by sowing the seeds during Spring in a cold frame, covering the seeds to the depth of one-quarter of an inch; also by division of the roots of the older plants in Winter or early Spring.
