A large genus comprising over two hundred species scattered widely over the Temperate Zone but mainly in South America, Mexico and South Africa. They are mostly used as border-plants or for covering the surface of the ground under or among shrubs.
They prefer a sandy soil and a sunny situation. All of the species are of easy culture and are propagated by division of the roots in early Spring. Plant them about a foot apart. They root quickly and spread rapidly; they should be taken up and replanted every second year.
