From the leaves of this plant (henbane) are made a solid extract, a fluid extract, and a tincture.

Hyoscyamus is an anodyne; a good deal like opium in its effects on the system, but weaker; and, instead of constipating, tending to act gently on the bowels. Of the extract (solid), the dose is two or three grains. Of the fluid extract, from two to ten or fifteen drops. This last is a very good quieting medicine for the violent coughing spells or severe whooping-cough.
