Ambriz, one of the divisions of the Portuguese colony of Angola in "W. Africa; area, 89,300 sq. m.; pop. reported at about 2,100,-000, but much less according to the official statements of the Portuguese government. The town of Ambriz, or Oporto do Ambriz, is at the mouth of the Loge or Ambriz river, in lat. 7° 52' S. It was formerly the port of the small negro kingdom of Ambriz, the capital of which is Quibanza. The Portuguese annexed the town in 1855; in 1865 it contained 16 factories or trading stations, two of which were American.
