[AS. air or aler, L. alnusJ] A genus of plants, consisting of trees and shrubs, growing chiefly in moist soils. The wood is used by turners, and is very valuable for mill-wheels and other wood-work under water. It affords the best kinds of charcoal for making gunpowder, and its bark is used by dyers and tanners.
