A fabulous monster of classic lore, with the head and bust of a woman, the body of a dog, wings of a bird, and tail of a serpent. The Egyptian sphinx was a winged lion with a human head and bust. This creature was carved in stone, and set up in rows as approaches to the great temples. The Great Sphinx, near the Pyramids of Egypt, is 62 feet high.
