In 1870, the Champion Belt presented by the Prestwick Club in 1860, became the absolute property of young Tom Morris, in virtue of his having won it three times in succession. There was no competition in 1871, but in 1872, the "Royal and Ancient," the "Honourable Company," and the Prestwick Club presented the present Championship Cup for annual competition.
