Large arches, especially those which show on both sides of the wall, are often, for the sake of economy, built of several courses of stone, jointed so as to give the appearance of solid voussoirs. Fig. 104 shows the manner in which many of the large arches designed by the late H. H. Richardson were constructed. Every alternate pair of voussoirs should be tied together by galvanized iron clamps.
