Required : Half a pound of castor sugar. One pound of strawberries. Cold water. One lemon.
Stalk the fruit, dust over with the sugar. Mash up the berries with a wooden spoon. Mix in half a pint of cold water, then strain it through a fine sieve. Next pour in a quart of cold water and the juice of the lemon. Ice well and serve in glasses with a small strawberry or a couple of verbena leaves floating on the top of each. Cost, about 8d.
