Often along the edges of borders in the garden, or in otherwise bare spots, a small ground cover of annuals to produce a carpet of flowers may be desired. This often happens at the edge of shrubbery which grows on a bank where it is difficult to train the branches so that they will come to the edge of the sod, thus covering the bare soil.
