In the fingers, toes, and soles of the feet there are small bones like peas, called sesamoid bones, from their resemblance to the seed of the sesamum ; they are formed in the substance of tendons ; they prevent friction and increase power. The patella is a large sesamoid bone developed in the tendons of the quadriceps extensor muscles.
