Inflammation of the veins, or phlebitis, occurs occasionally, though less frequently than was once supposed. It is both a cause and a result of thrombosis. It is a dangerous disease, often causing death.

The proper treatment, when it is known to occur, is continuous application of hot fomentations. The patient should be kept very quiet to prevent clots from being dislodged and carried into the circulation.
