An alkaloid obtained from Opium.
It may be obtained from the operative chemists.
Characters and Tests. - In colourless bold rhombic octahedra, soluble in 80 parts of cold water, freely soluble in alcohol and ether. The watery solution precipitates the Oxides of Lead, Copper, Iron, and several other metals, from solutions of their salts. It is not turned red by Nitric Acid, nor blue by Per-chloride of Iron, but is precipitated by infusion of Galls. The solution exerts left-handed rotation on a ray of polarized light.
