Mo-ra'se-e. L. Mor-us + aceae, fr. Celtic mor, black - i. e., alluding to the fruit's color. Trees, shrubs, herbs. Distinguished by leaves alternate or opposite, stipulate; sap milky; flowers monoecious or dioecious; calyx 4-5-parted, petals none, staminate panicled, pistillate capitate, cymose; ovary superior, 1-celled, ovule solitary; fruit various; universal; narcotic, sedative, tonic, astringent, fibres.
