Ster-ku-li-a'se-e. L. Sterculi-a + aceae, from stercus, excrement, Sterculius - God of - i. e., named from the fetid flowers or fruit of certain species. Trees, shrubs. Distinguished from Malvaceae by anthers 2-celled and flowers sometimes unisexual by abortion; calyx 5, corolla 5, twisted; tropics, temperate climates; demulcent, emetic, purgative.
