Distinguished by alternate leaves; large showy solitary axillary flowers, sepals 5, petals 5, crenulate, stamens monadelphous; ovary 2-several-celled, superior; fruit 3-5-celled, woody capsule, dehiscent; tropics; stimulant, astringent, sedative.
