Cicho'Rium In'Tybus, Chicory. Europe, naturalized in United States. Root with laticiferous vessels radiate, also is whiter, more woody, and has thinner bark than taraxacum. July collection contains 36 p. c. of inulin, bitter principle, etc., and has properties similar to taraxacum root, with which it often is mixed as an adulterant. Roasted root is used frequently to adulterate coffee. C. Endiv'ia, Endive; Levant; cultivated for its bitter leaves.
