The tincture of iodine, as well as the iodides, are very valuable in these disorders, especially in their early stages; they should always be given in conjunction with aconite, and occasionally the judicious use of an emetic is serviceable. I trace the benefit following the use of the iodide partly to a local effect, rendering the false membrane less tenacious, and partly to an eliminant action on the kidneys. Its use by inhalation has already been mentioned, and should be strictly attended to (v. p. 72).
