Dr. Birch has advocated the use of the gas in this condition, and states that it will relieve the constipation and other symptoms connected with it. The remedy has no doubt been of service, especially in cases with much headache, depression, loss of appetite, and sense of pain and constriction about the shoulder and chest, with palpitation and dyspnoea. In some chronic cases in which it was tried I have not seen benefit, and, as a general rule, medicinal and dietetic treatment, with such oxygen as is obtained by increased exercise, will give at least more rapid results.
