Eucalyptus Amygdalina

E. oleosa (F. v. Muller). Australia. N. 0. Myrtacea.

Essential oil; antiseptic; externally in rheumatism, internally for coughs, 5 drops on sugar. "Its inhalation is valuable in whooping cough." - Dr. W. Hardwicke, Lancet, 2-11-89. [E. globulus gives a superior oil, for internal use, tonic and stimulant, 5 to 10 drops; E. dumosa gives an inferior oil; E. mannifera and E. viminalis (Hanbury), a saccharine substance, called Australian Manna.]

Listerine is an American proprietary fluid antiseptic, said to contain Thymol, Eucalyptus, Mentha arvensis, Benzoic and Boracic Acids, etc.

Eucalyptus Globulus

Blue Gum. Australia.

Large bluish-green lanceolate leaves. Valuable in intermittent fever. Dose, tincture, 1/2 to 2 fluid drachms; fluid extract, 10 to 30 drops; solid extract, 2 to 10 grains. In albuminuria and post scarlatinal nephritis, 10 drops of fluid extract in water, every four hours. Also the essential oil, see above. The fluid extract is used locally in diphtheria.

Eucalyptene

This name has been given also to the tonic, bitter, amphorous principle of E. globulus: in malarial fevers. Dose, 1 to 3 grains.

Eucalyptol. C12 H40 O

From E. Globulus, etc, as it forms the larger portion of the essential oil of any Eucalyptus: colourless, mobile fluid, with aromatic odour and pungent taste Soluble in alcohol, scarcely in water. It is separated and purified: for inhalation in bronchitis, 2 drachms to pint of hot water. An antiseptic, and antipyretic. Recommended as a powerful destroyer of bacteria. [Treated with anhydrous phosphoric acid, the liquid colourless hydrocarbon Eucalyptene is produced.] Dose, internally, 5 minims in capsules, or in mucilage; externally for rheumatism and neuralgia.

Euonymin

Extractum Euonymi siccum. 1890. Add. to B. P.

A powerful hepatic, but a feeble intestinal stimulant. It contains the crystallizable glucoside of the same name, sparingly soluble in water. Dose, 1 to 4 grains; an aperient ought to follow it. The brown is considered somewhat stronger than the green. Officinal in the B. P. and U. S. A. Pharmacopoeia, the latter also contains the fluid extract: dose, 1/2 to 2 fluid drachms.
