Eugenic or Carophyllic Acid. C10H12O2.

The principal portion of oil of cloves. Exists also in Pimento, Canella alba, etc. A colourless oil, becoming brown.

Characteristics. An oily, colourless liquid, insoluble in water, and with strong aromatic odour and taste. Chemically it is allied to phenol.

Therapeutics. A powerful antiseptic, but inferior as a febrifuge to other antipyretics.

Dose: 15 grains, three times a day, dissolved in alcohol, and much diluted with water.

Enonymus Atropurpureus or Wahoo. N. America. N. 0. Celastracea.

The dried root bark is in the 1890 add. to B. P., and is used fo1 making the dried extract, or Euonymin. In quilled pieces, ashy grey outside, whitish inside, with fibrous fracture, faint odour and rather bitter taste.
