Sweet or Fragrant Sumach. N. America. N. 0. Anacardiaceæ.
Characteristics. The shrub producing the root-bark from which the fluid extract is made exhales an aromatic odour, from which circumstance its name is derived. Its bark contains volatile and fixed oils, resin, wax, butyric acid, tannin, etc. An innocent plant of this order.
Therapeutics. Its principal therapeutical action is that of a tonic upon the urinary organs, having been found beneficial in diabetes, incontinence of urine, enuresis, and other disorders. Dose of the fluid extract, 1 drachm several times a day. It stimulates the muscles of the bladder, and it is of real use in the bedwetting of children, in doses of 5 to 15 drops, three times a day, of the fluid extract.
