Tayuya. Trianosperma ficifolia; T. Tayuya, Mart. Dermophilla pendalica. S. America. N. 0. Cucurbitaeae. Root. For syphilis. A saturated tincture is used, 15 minims for a dose, subcutaneously; or, diluted, internally. Officinal in Rio, it has been exported to Italy and France; the alkaloid is Tayuyina.
Characteristics. Obtained by the agitation and subsequent distillation of oil of turpentine and sulphuric acid. It may exist as a crystalline mass: as usually seen, it is a clear colourless mobile liquid, with a pleasant odour resembling that of thyme. Spec. grav. 0.860, and boiling at about 313°.
Sparingly soluble in water, readily in alcohol; keep in the dark.
Recommended for winter cough in doses of 5 drops on sugar, every four hours, and increasing to 20 drops : also in flatulence, and as an expectorant. Also externally as an antiseptic, and for inhala-tions in bronchitis. - Dr. Murrell, Brit. Med. Jour., Dec. 12th, 1885.
Trional
Tetronal
In white crystals, scarcely soluble in water, fairly so in alcohol. Is nearly related to Sulphonal, and is also hypnotic, in doses of 10 to 40 grains (in powdered crystals), and a warm draught afterwards. Trional, an allied product, is hypnotic; dose 15 to 40 grains. No injurious effects from either. - Pharm. Journ., 30-8-90.
Water Germander: Indigenous. N. O. Labiates.
This herb has been found of some use in America in the treatment of haemorrhoids - being used both internally and locally. For the latter method of treatment an ointment is made by mixing one part of the finely powdered herb with nine parts of vaseline or fossiline.
One fluid ounce of the liquid extract is equivalent to one ounce of the herb ; dose : 1 to 2 fluid drachms of fluid extract.
