From Ulex Europæus or Furze. Indigenous. N. 0. Leguminosæ.

From the seeds, discovered by A. W. Gerrard.

A powerful organic base, soluble in water, insoluble in ether. Its salts as Sulphate, Nitrate, etc, are crystalline and soluble in water.

Therapeutics. A more powerful diuretic than Sparteine or preparations of Sarothamnus scoparius. (Cytisus scoparius.)

Dose: 1/10 grain in a pill. Employed with caution in cases of stricture.

"In doses of 1/6 grain, it first contracts, and then dilates the kidneys, with marked increase in urinary flow: the effective dose is limited by its toxic action on the respiratory centres." - Dr. Phillips, of London, N.Y. Medical Record, Sept. 10th, 1887.
