The fresh petals of Papaver Rhoeas. From indigenous plants.
Characters. - Of a scarlet colour and heavy poppy odour. On drying, they become dull in colour and lose their odour.
Composition. - They contain a red colouring matter soluble in water and spirit, but none of the alkaloids of opium. An alkaloid, rhoeadine, which they do contain has no poisonous action.

Use. - They have little or no physiological action, and are only used for colouring.
