A concrete resinous exudation from an undetermined plant, probably Canarium Commune. Nat. Ord. Terebinthaceae. There is, however, much doubt as to the tree from which this Resin is obtained. Source, chiefly imported from Manilla.

Med. Prop. and Therapeutic Uses. Stimulant, only used externally in the form of ointment. To indolent and ill-conditioned Ulcers this forms a good stimulant application; but it has no advantage over less expensive articles of the same class. The ointment is also used to promote suppuration from setons and issues. Offlc. Prep. Unguentum Elemi (Elemi oz. 1/4; Simple Ointment oz. j.).
