Spermaceti. A peculiar unctuous substance, obtained from the head of Physeter Macrocephalus, the Sperm or Spermaceti Whale, which inhabits the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is composed almost entirely of pure Cetin.
Med. Prop. and Action. Demulcent and emollient. It was formerly considered to have many virtues, but it is almost inert. When given internally to sheathe abraded surfaces, &c. it should be given in emulsion with mucilage or yolk of egg.
Offic. Prep. Unguentum Cetacei (Spermaceti oz. v.; White Wax oz. ij.; Almond Oil Oj. or q. s.).
In Catarrhs, it is occasionally given as a demulcent.
