The extremity of the arm, consisting of the palm and fingers, connected with the arm at the wrist. In all there are 27 bones in the hand. Eight of these are carpal bones, and form the wrist; 5 are meta-carpal bones, found in the palm ; and 14 are phalanges - 2 in the thumb and 3 in each of the fingers. The hand is the organ of touch, and there is no part of the body where the sense of touch is so acute as at the tips of the fiugers. The activity and pliancy of the movements of the hands are remarkably displayed in the playing of the pianist and violinist. A skillful pianist produces about 960 notes a minute in quick time; and this gives a fair idea of the rapidity of movement which can be attained by the hand.
