[AS. ate.] The grain of a corn-producing grass, which differs from wheat and barley in the loose arrangement of its spikelets on the stalk, forming what is termed a panicle. The oat is a hardy plant, well able to bear cold and moisture. Oatmeal is largely used in Scotland and in North America, and forms a very valuable article of food. Oats are excellent food for horses and cattle.
