It is a lot of fun to make these film book marks because no two need ever be alike. The book mark in the photograph had the design cut out of silver paper which was then inserted between two strips of clear film. The edges and fringe were made of red yarn. These instructions will explain how to cut the center design of paper. Many students have inserted postage stamps, pieces of lace, printed or woven fabrics, dried flowers, photographs, and other flat articles in their book marks.

Procedure

1. ;Cut the film strip into two seven inch lengths both having the same number of holes. If you own a revolving leather punch, punch four number two holes through both pieces of film at the same time, at the top and at the bottom. If you do not have a punch, use a darning needle and poke the needle back and forth in the same place until you obtain holes large enough for the tapestry needle and yarn to go through.

2. ;Cut a piece of practice paper for the center design 7/8 " x 63/4 ". Fold the paper in half lengthwise, then fold it in half again the short way. On the folded edges of the paper only, snip out small v's, ovals, squares, or any combination of them. Open the paper and study the result. If you are satisfied with it, fold the silver paper or colored paper that you intend to use, and snip out the same shaped pieces.

3. ;Thread the tapestry needle with two yards of yarn. Hold the two pieces of film together so that the holes match. Beginning at the first hole on the long side, insert the needle there and pull the thread through leaving an end of two inches hang. Go over the edge of the film into each hole until you reach the end of the long side. Make two stitches in the last hole. Go through the four holes you made at the top. Insert the fancy paper or whatever you wish between the two film strips. Keep the article smooth. Make two stitches in the corner hole and continue down the other side until you reach the last hole in the long side. Cut the yarn off allowing two inches to hang.

4. ;Cut six pieces of yarn each four inches long. Fold one piece in half, bring the crochet needle from the back through one of the four holes you made at the bottom of the film, hook the folded loop on the crochet needle, and pull the double thread halfway through. Take the two ends of the yarn and draw them through the loop just made. Tighten the knot. Finish the other three center holes as you did the first one. On the two end holes, insert the crochet needle the same way, and when you bring the ends of the yarn through the loops, include the loose hanging strand and tighten the knot. With the pair of scissors, trim the fringe evenly across the bottom.
