Latin, Stramonium
Eng., Stramonium. Synonym, Jamestown (Jimson) Weed. The dried leaves of Datura Stramonium or of Datura Tatula.
1 grain (0.06 Gm.).
Eng., Extract of Stramonium. A soft solid about five times the strength of the crude drug. Average Dose.- 1/6 grain (0.01 Gm.).
Eng., Tincture of Stramonium. Represents 10 per cent. of the drug.
8 minims (0.5 mil).
Eng., Stramonium Ointment. Contains 10 per cent. of the extract (pilular).
Antispasmodic, anodyne, mydriatic. 'Uses.-Stramonium is principally used in the treatment of asthmatic attacks.
The leaves are generally smoked, alone or with other agents. The tincture is sometimes given by mouth, but altogether they are not often prescribed. The following will illustrate a way of ordering the drug.
In the form of a cigarette in the treatment of asthma:
