This is a rugged-looking tree, which frequently attains the height of 100 or 150 feet, with a diameter of from 3 to 6 feet. The wood is very dense and heavy; the colour a dark red; it is very strong and durable, but extremely difficult to work. It is not an economical wood in a country where labour is scarce. The weight of a cubic foot when dry is 64 1/2 lbs. Crushing force, in the direction of the fibres, of a cube 1 inch square and 1 inch high, 9921 lbs. Breaking load on the middle of a specimen with a bearing 1 foot long and 1 inch square is 1340 lbs.
