Encysted Tumour Of The Throat

There is sometimes a tumour of a very different kind placed in the front of the throat. It is usually found on, or a little below, the thyroid cartilage, between the skin and the cellular substance beneath. Prom the beginning it is soft, and plainly contains a fluid. Its progress is uncertain, but generally slow, and it is never attended by inflammation or heat. Fomentations would be thrown away here, and a puncture with the lancet would afford merely temporary relief. A seton must be passed through the tumour, from the top to the bottom of it, and worn until the cyst is obliterated. The contents of this tumour are also various; that which is oftenest seen is a glairy fluid, much resembling the white of an egg; but after the swelling has been opened two or three times, the fluid becomes mingled with blood, and at length purulent.
