Collect the odd pieces of yarn left from knitting or crocheting-even the small pieces-for they may be used to make many things.

To make yarn dolls. Cut several strands of yarn-about 8 inches long-and tie them together through the middle, with another piece of yarn. (Fig. 1) An inch below this, tie the whole bunch together. (Fig. 2) Separate a few strands on each side for arms and tie the ends of these. (Fig. 3) Tie around the middle for a waist; (Fig. 3) then if you are making a man, separate the bunch again and tie the strands together for feet. (Fig. 4) Sew eyes, nose and a mouth with white yarn. Tie a boy and girl together, and wear them on your coat lapel.

If you would like a soft ball to use in the house, here is one that is easy to make. All you need is some odd pieces of yarn, a darning needle, and cardboard.

Cut a 41/2 inch circle from the cardboard, and in the center of this another circle about 3/4 inches wide. With a long thread in your needle, sew through the center hole, over the edge, and through the hole from the back. Keep winding the thread this way until your hole is full. Now take a short thread and run it under each thread on the front, and tie the two ends in a square knot-close to the center. Cut all the threads at the circle edge, and cut off the cardboard.

Now you will find you have made a soft ball.

Indoor Gardens

Sponge garden-Wet a sponge and place it in a shallow dish. Scatter some bird seed over it. Keep it wet, and you will soon find little sprouts growing out of the sponge.

Peas and Beans in a bottle-These are fun to watch growing. Put the seed either in a small bottle or glass, and keep a little water in the bottom.

Vegetable greens-The tops of carrots, and sweet potatoes will grow green leaves if they are kept in a saucer of water. (Use only enough water to cover half the vegetable.)

Vegetable Animals

Have you ever noticed that some vegetables look like animals? By adding raisins, or nuts or pinning two or more vegetables together with toothpicks, you can make a circus of animals. (This is fun to try for a Thanksgiving table decoration.)

Look in the garden, and you'll he surprised, To find corn with ears, and potatoes with eyes.

Things To Make In The Summer

It is fun to make a puffball from a thistle. Find one that is in blossom, and cut off the flower top-where the stem begins. Pull out the pink petals, and cut off the green prickles. Then with a large needle, run a thread through the middle of the flower-to the stem end. Tie the thread to make a loop, and hang the thistle in the sun to dry. After several days it will turn into a soft puffball.

This windmill is made by fitting a spool to the top of a wooden meat skewer; then tacking two thin sticks-crossed, to the side of the spool. Color the windmill with bright enamel paint. When it is finished, it will be nice in the garden with some of the short stemmed flowers.
