For saws and springs in general, the following is an excellent liquid: Spermaceti oil, 20 gals.; beef suet rendered, 20 lbs.; neat's-foot oil, 1 gallon; pitch, 1 lb.; black resin, 3 lbs. The last two articles must be previously melted together, and then added to the other Ingredients, when the whole must be heated in a proper iron vessel, with a close cover fitted to it, until all moisture is evaporated, and the composition will take fire on a flaming body being presented to its surface.
